Creating Google Analytics Custom Dashboards


If you use Google Analytics to track the visitors that view your website, you will greatly benefit from using Google Analytics dashboards which are easy to set up.

Google Analytics dashboards allows you to choose the data you would like to see and create a custom report showing all of the data you're interested in, these dashboards are completely customisable and you can choose to have up to 12 different widgets on a single dashboard.

Once you have created a dashboard you can then schedule the dashboard to be sent via email every month, week, quarter .etc export it to PDF, and more.


Creating a Google Analytics Custom Dashboard


  1. Login to your Google Analytics account
  2. Select the account / Website you would like to create a dashboard for
  3. Click "Customization" then "Dashboards"
  4. Click the "Create" button from the dashboards page to create a new dashboard
  5. Give your new dashboard a name, you can choose to create a blank dashboard or a starter dashboard with some precreated widgets, this is helpful if you are still learning, however for your own custom dashboard click "Blank Canvas"
  6. Click "Create Dashboard"
  7. You will see a dialog "Add a Widget" asking you to add your first widget to your newly created Google Analytics Dashboard, the next section covers the different types of widgets available.


Adding Widgets to Google Analytics Dashboard


  1. From your custom dashboard you can add widgets by clicking the "Add Widget" button, you may already have this open if you have just created a custom dashboard.
  2. A dialog will display allowing you to add a widget to your dashboard, you can choose from 6 types of widgets which are each useful for displaying data in different ways.
    Metric - Displaying a number like total page views
    Timeline - Displaying how data changes over a period of time 
    Geomap - Displays where your users are from, perhaps what states or countries place the most orders 
    Table - For displaying information such as top pages customers view 
    Pie - Great for visualising metrics  
    Bar - For displaying data over time
  3. Select the Widget type you would like to create
  4. Choose a metric you would like the widget to display, you can show pageviews, search terms, and much more, click "Add a metric"
  5. You can also choose to filter the data to for example only show data that contains "/search" in the URL that way you can potentially list your most popular products or blog posts for example
  6. Click "Save" and your Widget will be added to the dashboard
