5 things you didn't know PowerPoint could do

If I said that Microsoft PowerPoint was the most versatile piece of software ever created, you would probably sigh in disbelief, but it turns out Microsoft PowerPoint is much more than just a presentation program.

Whether you have a tight software budget or just need to get a task done with the software that you have available, PowerPoint may be a convenient option.

Video Editor

Adding the recording tab to the PowerPoint ribbon enables a range of controls to record your presentations, embed videos and screen recordings, as well as export options to save your presentation out to video format, these options are also available on the ribbon or in the file menu export options.

The record option allows you to run through your presentation to set the timings for each slide, once the timings have been set you can export your presentation to a MP4 video. You could use this to create training videos very easily for example, and you can even use PowerPoint animations to enhance your video.

Here's an introduction to webscraping made with PowerPoint.

Graphic Designer

PowerPoint has a range of options for designers, with the options to insert shapes, images, text, or indeed any other content produced in the Office suite, create a new presentation with custom dimensions and you can create designs and then export them in high resolution Jpeg images. See this guide on how to increase the export resolution in PowerPoint .

Animator

PowerPoint comes with a whole range of animations baked in to allow you to create cool looking animations for your site quite easily, and with PowerPoint providing export options for MP4 video and GIF you can save your animations and embed them into your website.

We used PowerPoint to make an animation for our upcoming web scraping course, check it out here.

Illustrator

Use PowerPoint to create your own shapes, logos, and illustrations, with the shape tool providing a range of different objects you can use and the pathfinder tools that enable you to make custom shapes from other shapes to create a design you like. Checkout our video demo below on making custom shapes in PowerPoint, also see our shape tools add-in for some useful additional options for editing shapes.

Other uses

There are many other creative uses for PowerPoint and you may know of some too, in one of my previous roles they used PowerPoint slides exported out as JPG images to display a slideshow of advertisements on a TV. Are there other ways you've creatively used PowerPoint? Leave your suggestions in the comments below.
