Policy filtering in InTune

You can create filters in InTune MDM to ensure when you make changes they don't break things for users, for example you could have some sort of test / prod setup, or another example of what I needed to do in my role is ensure that changes I made don't affect CE's and higher up roles.

This can be achieved in InTune by creating a filter to exclude devices, and then creating a policy that uses the filter.

Creating a filter to exclude devices from InTune policy

In the following steps we will walk through creating a policy in InTune to exclude devices from a policy allowing you to test and roll out policies that don't impact the wrong users.

  1. In InTune navigate to Devices, then click on filters from the left
  2. Then click on "Create" from the top menu to create a new InTune Filter
  3. Now you will be able to define the rules for the filter, you can select the property you want to filter and select if that propety equals a certain value, in this example I want to create a rule to exclude a device, so I will select the device name property and set Operator to "Equals" then for the value provide the name of the device to exclude.

You can add more than one expression to a filter.
  4. Finally set your relevant device groups that the filter will apply to and you can select the filter mode as include or exclude, the filter is now created.
